What is temperature control and how does it work in vaping?
Temperature control devices have taken the market by storm and have been the latest advancement in vaping.
Temperature control only works with devices and coils which are temperature control compatible. Devices that support temperature control are very common now. The coils which support temperature control include Nickel, Titanium and Stainless Steel. Not all devices support all of these different coil types, so you will have to make sure that the device you are using supports the type of coil you want to use.
The devices measure the resistance of the wire to measure their temperature. Certain coil wires don’t fluctuate in resistance as they heat up(like kanthal, which has a static resistance). Based on this change of resistance in the wire, the device detects how hot the coil is and it can limit it’s temperature accordingly.
The different types of coils for temperature control
Nickel Temperature Control Coils
Nickel wire is one of the methods to use temperature control on devices that support temperature control mode. Nickel wire is the least desired wire for temperature control because of it’s potential harms and complications. Nickel wire is also the hardest wire to work with if you are building your coils yourself.
Nickel CAN NOT be dry burned or used in wattage mode.
Titanium Temperature Control Coils
Titanium wire is another wire that works with temperature control devices. This is generally the second most desirable wire to use for temperature control and is safer to use than Nickel.
Titanium CAN NOT be dry burned or used in wattage mode.
Stainless Steel Temperature Control Coils
Stainless Steel wire is also another wire that works with temperature control vape devices. This is generally the most desirable wire to use for temperature control and is considered to be potentially the safest option for temperature control wires.
Stainless Steel CAN be dry burned and CAN be used in wattage mode, giving it the most flexibility in temperature control compatible wires.
What are the benefits of Temperature Control?
- No Dry/Burnt Hits
With temperature control, you avoid dry hits. When the wick is dry and there isn’t any liquid to be vaporized, the device detects this and prevents the coil from ramping up which results in you not burning your cotton. With temperature control, you won’t have to worry about tasting dry cotton any longer!
- Battery Life
Since your setups are now limited to the exact desired vape and wattage you desire, you won’t be using excess power to increase the coils temperature past your desired experience. This results in increased battery life from the heat cutting off at a certain temperature instead of continuing to use power to increase the temperature.
How do I configure temperature control on my device?
Temperature control mode has two options, to adjust the wattage/joules(let’s consider it the same as watts) as well as the temperature.
Consider the temperature you set the device at as the limiter and the wattage as the acceleration. Running the wattage too low will not allow the device to hit the desired wattage fast enough or hit the desired wattage at all. Finding the balance of the correct temperature and the accompanying wattage is a bit of an art and will require some testing until you find the setup that you will personally enjoy!
Temperature ranges of 380*-500* F are possible, with the most common ranges being in the 420-480* F range.
How we recommend tuning your setup is to try a temperature, lets say 420*F. You then adjust your wattage to your standard wattage you normally ran your device at. Give it a shot. Adjust the wattage based on the vape, if it’s not running hot enough, try increasing the wattage. If it’s too hot, try decreasing the wattage.
Adjust the wattage back and forth and see if you get a desirable vape. If you don’t, you then adjust the temperature up or down accordingly and go through the same process. Once you find the range of temperature and wattage you enjoy, you will be able to adjust your settings very easily in the future for your current setup.
